Understanding Direct Cremation

What is a Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation is simply a service that encompasses cremation only. Unlike a traditional funeral, there is no attended ceremony or mourners gathered – it’s a straightforward means of saying goodbye in a way that suits the relatives and loved ones of the deceased.

How Does a Direct Cremation Work?

At C V Gower, our direct cremation services usually take place at our local crematorium, before the ashes are returned to the family and friends of the deceased.

The Process of Direct Cremation

What Happens at a Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation (also known as a basic cremation, simple cremation, unattended cremation, cremation without ceremony, or a ‘pure’ cremation) will take place somewhere local when you go through the process with C V Gower, either in Sedgemoor or the Weston-super-Mare crematorium.

While there is not usually a traditional service included with a direct cremation, there is the option of having an attended ceremony if that’s something you’d like to talk through with our team, such as a celebration of life event or a separate service entirely. Whatever it is you’re looking for, let us know and we can come to the right conclusion.

Costs and Packages

Direct Cremation Costs in Nailsea

How Much is a Direct Cremation?

Our direct cremations cost £995. This cost includes collection of the deceased from their place of rest (within a 20-mile radius of Nailsea), and a simple, environmentally-friendly coffin for the cremation.

How Much is an Attended Direct Cremation?

Our attended direct cremations cost £1240. This service gives mourners the chance to attend a ceremony in the Crematorium Chapel, where they are free to share memories, read poems, and reflect on the life of the deceased together.

After the Cremation

What Happens to the Ashes After a Direct Cremation?

After the cremation process, the ashes of the deceased will be given back to the loved ones of the deceased, who can then decide to do what they think is best. This could be keeping the ashes in a special place, or perhaps scattering them somewhere meaningful.

We also offer the option of scattering the ashes in the Garden of Remembrance at the crematorium. You can also decide to have them interred in a new or existing plot at the local cemetery or churchyard, with the option of having an attended cremation service if you’d like to include a ceremony in your service.

If you do decide to scatter the ashes at a meaningful place of your choosing, it’s important to note that this might require you to seek out permission from the landowner of that place, depending on its location. We are always here to provide our advice and support with this if you need.

Pam Ball, Towerhead Banwell 11th February 2024

Catherine Cotter, Blagdon 9th February 2024

"Lindsay and her team are outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble. They ( and especially Lindsay) were kind, compassionate, respectful and efficient. We had a family cremation, church Celebration of Life service and wake on the same day. Everything went as we hoped it would. Thank you Lindsay. You made a difficult time easier to cope with and took a weight from our shoulders."

L Simmons. Axbridge 28th January 2024

"Losing my mum was the hardest thing I have ever faced, but Lindsay from C V Gower made the whole process feel like I was not alone. From the first call, when I explained the need to bring my mum home from Hampshire to Somerset, her response was not a problem. She handled the coroner’s office and the GP with efficiency, keeping me informed while all the time respecting my grief. C V Gower’s dedication extended beyond the logistics of bringing my mum home - I wanted a church service for my mum and then a cremation and Lindsay and her team ensured the two services were seamless. They also arranged for a piper to play at my Mum's funeral; they located a company to stream the service on-line for distant friends and family; and even helped me locate the venue for the wake. Nothing was too much for Lindsay, whether it was offering advice during a difficult moment or breaking the tension with a well-timed joke. On the day of the funeral, Lindsay and her team were a great support, guiding us through each step with sensitivity and respectfulness. I cannot thank them enough, and I would not hesitate to recommend C V Gower to anyone facing a similar loss."

Rachel Forsey, Langford 22nd January 2024

"Gowers made sure that every wish we had for Dad’s funeral was met and made sure that nothing was too much trouble and no request too unusual. Lindsey organised everything beautifully making a pretty horrible task as stress free as possible. We could not have asked for more and would wholeheartedly recommend Gowers to anyone."
