Understanding Direct Cremation

What is a Direct Cremation?

Also known as an unattended funeral, a direct cremation is a simple, straightforward, practical, and cost-effective approach to saying goodbye to a loved one, without the extras usually associated with a traditional funeral service. It involves a cremation only, without gathered mourners.

How Does a Direct Cremation Work?

With a direct cremation, you’ll receive a simple cremation service without a traditional ceremony. A direct cremation differs from traditional funeral services in that there is no attendance by mourners – there is only the cremation, which will be performed by us with the utmost care and consideration, before the ashes are returned back to you.

What Happens at a Direct Cremation?

Also known as a basic cremation, simple cremation, unattended cremation, cremation without ceremony, or a ‘pure’ cremation, a direct cremation involves the cremation only, without the options traditionally associated with a funeral service.

The deceased person is cremated locally at either Sedgemoor or Weston-super-Mare crematorium, and the ashes are handed back to the family. With a direct cremation, there is no service or ceremony in the crematorium chapel, or attendance by mourners. The service is a straightforward and simple approach to saying goodbye to your loved one.

Family members also have the option to arrange a separate ceremony, memorial, or celebration of life event if they would like to. If this is something you would like to explore as a way of saying goodbye to your loved one, we are more than happy to help out with these arrangements, also.

How to Arrange a Direct Cremation

If you’d like to arrange a direct cremation for your loved one, you can call us at 01934842945, or get in touch via our contact form or our email at mail@cvgower.co.uk in the first instance.

We will make all the necessary arrangements with you when you visit our office at 19 Woodborough Road, Winscombe, BS25 1AB. If you would prefer, we are happy to go through all the paperwork via phone, email or by post. We are always more than happy to offer our support, whenever you need us.

Costs and Packages

Direct Cremation Costs

How Much is a Direct Cremation?

The fee for our direct cremation is £995. This cost includes a simple environmentally-friendly coffin for the cremation and collection of the deceased from their place of rest, within a 20-mile radius. The cremation will take place locally either at Sedgemoor or Weston-super-Mare Crematorium.

How Much is an Attended Direct Cremation?

The fee for our attended direct cremation is £1225. With an attended direct cremation, a small number of people come together to attend a ceremony in the Crematorium Chapel. Although there is no Minister or Celebrant present for conducting a traditional funeral service, there will be the space for you, your family, and loved ones to share memories, read tributes or poems, and celebrate the life of the deceased. This is a more simple, informal service, where you will have the chance to say  goodbye in a way that suits you.

After the Cremation

What Happens to the Ashes After a Direct Cremation?

Following a direct cremation, the ashes will be returned to the family of the deceased. You can decide what feels best to you and your family in terms of what to do with the cremated remains. With our direct cremation service, you have the option to have them scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at the Crematorium, or you can also have them interred in a new or existing plot at the local cemetery or churchyard.

Lots of families like to scatter their loved ones’ ashes somewhere that held meaning, or have them scattered at sea. Depending on the area you choose, you may have to ask the land owner’s permission to do this. If you’d like to ask for our advice on anything, we are always more than happy to offer guidance.

You are also more than welcome to arrange a service or ceremony to honour your loved one, separate from the cremation, which we can offer our support and help with if that’s something you’d like to explore.

Catherine Cotter, Blagdon 9th February 2024

"Lindsay and her team are outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble. They ( and especially Lindsay) were kind, compassionate, respectful and efficient. We had a family cremation, church Celebration of Life service and wake on the same day. Everything went as we hoped it would. Thank you Lindsay. You made a difficult time easier to cope with and took a weight from our shoulders."

L Simmons. Axbridge 28th January 2024

"Losing my mum was the hardest thing I have ever faced, but Lindsay from C V Gower made the whole process feel like I was not alone. From the first call, when I explained the need to bring my mum home from Hampshire to Somerset, her response was not a problem. She handled the coroner’s office and the GP with efficiency, keeping me informed while all the time respecting my grief. C V Gower’s dedication extended beyond the logistics of bringing my mum home - I wanted a church service for my mum and then a cremation and Lindsay and her team ensured the two services were seamless. They also arranged for a piper to play at my Mum's funeral; they located a company to stream the service on-line for distant friends and family; and even helped me locate the venue for the wake. Nothing was too much for Lindsay, whether it was offering advice during a difficult moment or breaking the tension with a well-timed joke. On the day of the funeral, Lindsay and her team were a great support, guiding us through each step with sensitivity and respectfulness. I cannot thank them enough, and I would not hesitate to recommend C V Gower to anyone facing a similar loss."

Rachel Forsey, Langford 22nd January 2024

"Gowers made sure that every wish we had for Dad’s funeral was met and made sure that nothing was too much trouble and no request too unusual. Lindsey organised everything beautifully making a pretty horrible task as stress free as possible. We could not have asked for more and would wholeheartedly recommend Gowers to anyone."
