What is Direct Cremation?

What is a Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation is an alternative funeral option that has been growing in popularity in the UK in recent years. It offers a simple approach to saying goodbye to a loved one, without the options associated with a traditional funeral service.

No Service at the Crematorium

With a direct cremation, the deceased person is cremated, without a formal funeral or memorial service in the Crematorium Chapel. Family members can arrange a separate memorial or celebration of life event, if they choose to do so, and we are happy to help you with these arrangements, if you would like us too.

One of the primary reasons for the rise in popularity of direct cremation is the low cost. It provides an affordable option for those who may be on a limited budget or prefer to allocate their funds elsewhere. For other people, they prefer a direct cremation as they don't believe in having the pomp and ceremony of a service.

Can we Visit the Chapel of Rest?

We fully believe that if people would like to say goodbye to there loved one in our Chapel of Rest, it is not our place to stop them. If the next of kin allows it, people can visit our Chapel of Rest to say their goodbyes before the deceased is taken to the Crematorium for the Cremation.

What happens to their cremated remains?

There are many options available for disposal of the cremated remains. You can have them scattered in the Garden of Remembrance at the Crematorium; you can have them interred in a new or existing plot at the Crematorium, local Cemetery or Churchyard. Some families like to take the remains to a place that was significant to the deceased and scatter them. You may require permission from the land owners to do this so please ask our advise. You could also have the remains scattered or buried at sea.

Direct cremation is increasing in the UK and is likely to remain a significant choice for families in the years to come.
