Where to Register a Death
In the first instance, You will need to telephone the Registrar's office for the district where the death occurred. They will take your contact details, including an email address. Once they have received the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD), which will be emailed to them by the Doctor, or the notification from the Coroner's Office, they will email you a link, so that you can access their diary to make an appointment to Register the death. The Registrar will require the following information before they can register a death.
- Date and place of death
- Name, surname and maiden name (if applicable) of the deceased
- The deceased’s date and place of birth
- Last occupation of the deceased
- The usual address of the deceased
- Whether they received any pension or benefits from public funds
- Name and last occupation of the deceased’s spouse (if married or widowed)
- If the deceased was still married, the date of birth of the surviving spouse.
- The deceased's National Insurance Number
- The full name and address of the person making the registration will also be added to the register.
The Registrar will issue a green certificate which they will email directly to the Funeral Directors, Crematorium & Cemetery. For a charge of £12.50 per copy, the Registrar will issue “Copies of the Entry”, (copies of the death certificate). These will be required by banks, insurance companies, private pensions and the Probate Office.
Registrar’s 'Tell Us Once' Service
Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go. The registrar will have given you a unique reference number to access the Tell Us Once service online or by phone. You’ll need the deceased’s:
- date of birth
- National Insurance number
- driving licence number
- passport number
- details of any benefits or entitlements they were getting, eg State Pension
- details of any local council services they were getting, eg Blue Badge
- Registration number of any vehicle owned by the deceased.
- name and address of their next of kin
- name, address and contact details of the person or company dealing with their estate (property, belongings and money), known as their ‘executor’ or ‘administrator’
Organisations Tell Us Once will contact
- HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) ‐ personal tax
- Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) ‐ benefits, and state pension
- Passport Office ‐ to cancel a British passport
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) ‐ to cancel a licence and remove the person as the
- keeper of up to 5 vehicles (contact DVLA separately if you keep or sell a vehicle)
- the local council ‐ to cancel Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, a Blue Badge, inform council
- housing services and remove the person from the electoral register
- Veterans UK ‐ to cancel Armed Forces Compensation Scheme payments
Tell Us Once will also contact some public sector pension schemes so that they cancel future pension payments. They’ll notify:
- My Civil Service Pension
- NHS Pension Scheme
- Armed Forces Pension Scheme
- pension schemes for NHS staff, teachers, police and firefighters in Scotland
- local authority pension schemes
Life Ledger Service
Life Ledger is a simple to use service that allows families to close, freeze or transfer all their loved one's accounts at 1000's of different companies, all in one go.
Similar to the Government's Tell Us Once Service, the Life Ledger platform can be used to store and organise an individual’s end-of-life affairs and facilitates the notification of a death to companies used by the deceased. The services can be used by of yourself as next of kin or by an Executor and is very easy to use. There is no charge to set up and use the service and you can keep track of everything in one place.
- Create a free account and enter some basic information about your loved one.
- Choose the companies that you wish to tell and add some account details.
- Press send and Life Ledger take are of the rest.

The process will come to an end when either all the company or companies you wish to notify have taken the necessary steps to register that the deceased will no longer be needing their services or after six months of inactivity by you in relation to the death in question on our platform, whichever is sooner.
